401K Maximum contribution amount for 2012

I just called Vanguard to confirm the amount of yearly maximum contribution to the traditional IRA account for 2012. The specialist told the maximum contribution is $5,000. From the previous post I read here, my understanding is $17,000 for single and $34,000 for couples.  The specialist said that he is not aware of this finger of contribution.  Am I misunderstanding of the IRS rules?  Thanks for all your advice.
