Umbrella insurance is in addition to individual liability insurance that you purchased for each house.

If you have liability insurance of 300k and umbrella insurance 1 million, you would have total liability protection of 1.3 million.

Umbrella insurance typically covers 4 properties, including primary residence plus automobiles. So it is likely cheaper than buy 1 million liability insurance for each and every property.
