Just to share some personal opinion with friend aMao and others.
Crab grass is probably the toughest. There is no instant satisfactory way. It takes labor, chemical, and time.
To apply a shield in Spring is very important. I've skipped a couple times, not the end of world though. If the lawn is full of crab already, it'll take more than a year to look somewhat decent.
IMO, professionals don't have the time and interest to know your lawn, the spots. That's understandable, they need to make money.
The most effective strategy, is the have a thick healthy lawn. In that sense, you need to apply 4-6 treatments on annual basis. Water the lawn, over seed in autumn, apply winterizer... All those would be important to take space from crab grass.
Yes to me the headache is bare spots: 尤其是沿馬路那一條三尺的lawn,草地沿driveway的那些邊,還有就是我們鄰居草地裏漫山遍野的crab grass.
