not sure why your plumber wants to dig it open...

1st, they should try a bigger sewer snake with grinder head, it can grind down any tree roots, if you don't fine any small pieces tree root on return.

2nd, they should try use a 300lb jet machine..

the only time you should consider dig it open is, if you find dirt and sand when running the snake.
