Pure fundamental research attracts two sets of people. Either they are wealthy enough, they don't have to work for money, they pursue their passion! A good example is Henry Cavendish. Or they are so poor, that's the only way of changing their social status, such as my professor, he was the 1st person from his family graduated with a high school diploma and who was a lorry driver when he was reading for his 1st degree.
