I got almost exact experience.

An old friend of family "got" this in Europe. I emailed, just give a phone number, I'll call you... Then I started to mix up English and Chinese, mentioned something like my father said Hi...

Then I realized, the reply-to pretty much always got hacked, like between '0' and 'o'.
