I like the approach - To set up a goal and work toward to the goal!
1) To preserve the purchasing power - Make sure there is anti-inflation portion in your portfolio
2) To allocate the portfolio which can prctect yourself from financial storms - either in stock market or in real estate market
3) To minimize the tax effect; Identify your goal - To use all $$ by the last day or to save $$ to kids. Time and portfolio structure can make huge differnce on your final portfolio size due to tax effect.
