Dividend is paid out of the after tax dollar on the corporate level. However, when you receive the dividend, you've got to pay tax again on the individual level.

In theory, a company should be more valuable if it never pays dividend. Some companies choose to buy back their shares to pamper the valuation but not to pay any dividend.
