Then you never executed the writ

Only a sheriff can execute the writ.  If you just change the lock by yourself, theoritically the tenant can still come back, pick the lock and stay inside.  Then your writ would expire, because it was never executed in 30 or 60 days whatever the local deadline was. 

This is just about dotting the i's and crossing the t's.  You are free to do what you want.
