China needed a deep enough land stretch to absorb the periodic invasions from the north.  大一統 served this strategy well.

The Roman empire, rimmed around the mediterranean sea, was unable to do that, thus failed into fragments.

大一統 has been built into the Chinese Psyche for this reason perhaps.

Proverbs such as "沒有國，哪有家" find their justifications in China's actual history.
