片子有很多佛教和印度教的哲學。什麽才是真和假的世界，不同的人作不同的選擇，等等。

還有些細節也是, for instance the kid bends a spoon by willing it and reveals to Neo: Don't try to bend the spoon, it is impossible. Instead, try to realize that there is no spoon.

It is a profoundly philosophical movie.

An irony: The directors made a few more sequels after the movie harvested a great amount of money. The sequels turned out very bad, a betrayal to the original one. The original has a central criticism to capitalism. The directors' decisions on making the sequels are a proof how powerful capitalism is.  I always thought the directors betrayed themselves, and perhaps as a consequence to this, they made no more good movies since ... at least to my taste.

The love story is very successful since it is a hidden minor but necessary ingredient (and crucial at the end) in the whole plot which is much grander.

西遊記女兒國國王與唐僧的故事有點像，雖然結果不同。
