Regarding China not having developed modern sciences it involves several factors. I came across related ancient texts quite a few times, and felt that our ancestors by and large didn't like to develope sciences/technology. When a minority of them delved into this field, their results were hardly received by others with enthusiasm. Passages of this sort can be seen in works by 墨子、公孫龍、惠施(quoted by 莊子as for criticism ironically) etc.
I personally like mathematics and physics, and thus found this perhaps a bit regrettable. But there is no conclusion regarding the ultimate effects of sciences thus far. Some of them have done a great deal of harm to men while some have made miracles happen.
