Many were expecting a defensive battle, but Sweden played an uncharacteristically aggressive style that saw them generate some early chances, the best one coming off the stick of Gustav Nyquist who hit the post.
However, after settling in, Canada began to take control and took a 1-0 lead when the Canadian forecheck produced a turnover and Jeff Carter’s shot from the halfwall was redirected by Jonathan Toews past Swedish goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Toews also scored the opening goal against the U.S. in the gold medal game four years ago in Vancouver.
Shots were 12-11 for Canada after one period.
