Hi all,
The following is a note from a friend, regarding a Duke grad student's cat who needs urgent surgery. The student is from Colombia and is having difficulty covering the costs. If you're expecting a tax refund, helping the cat in need would be a great way of spending money returned by Uncle Sam.

I'm also pasting my friend's note below for easy access. Thank you all!
Please help Jattin!
Dear Friends and Animal Lovers:
Jattin is a 1-year-old handsome, sweet cat who is suffering from a Condylar fracture of his left femur. Without surgical intervention, Jattin might develop a significant limp and chronic pain. His owner, Ivan Vargas, will take him to the Triangle Veterinary Referral Hospital (608 Morreene Rd., Durham) tomorrow to have the surgery. The surgery cannot be performed without payment up front. The total cost is $2,500.
Ivan is overwhelmed by this expense. He is a Colombian graduate student in Latin American studies at Duke University, working on environmental issues in the Global South. Not only does he live off a tight student stipend, he also supports his sister in Colombia and helps with her school expenses. Animals are companions and healers for Ivan, and Jattin means all of this to him.
Jattin is a very energetic, curious, and strong being. His resilience has been inspiring to all his human friends. If you are an animal lover and can identify with the pressure of needing to have expensive surgeries necessary for your pet(s), we hope you will make a donation. Our goal is to raise $2,200.
