Smith is supposed to be a popular simple last name, that is why it is chosen. I also heard a story from another coworker, its truth yet to be confirmed: some earlier immigrants to US, whose last names for some reasons not at hand, then the US officials just put down "Mr. Smith" or "Mrs. Smith".
