Actually, Japan was not actually Fascist; it was, however, an extremely aggressive militaristic imperialist. As the Japanese economy faltered during the years of the Great Depression, the civilian government of the Taisho period collapsed under immense pressure and was essentially hijacked by extreme military leaders backed by Emperor Hirohito. Although there is significant debate as to where the exact responsibility for the numerous Japanese war crimes lies, Hirohito at the very least facilitated military rule.
