here is the essay: The Driveway
Today, my family’s home had the driveway paved for the final time. We had recently moved into our home about two years ago, and not everything had been finished yet. The house was a newly built semi-detached single garage property, and everything was being put in place.
The atmosphere was scalding, humid, and stanky. It was 33 Degrees celcius, but with the humidex it felt like 40 degrees. The time was 10:30 AM, and the sound of heavy machinery was abroad. The road pavers had arrived onto our yard. Our yard was a clean gravel driveway, with a growing tree, and green grass all around, with bits and pieces of soil spread over the grass.
The road pavers consisted of seven middle-aged men. There was a truck driver who was supplying the gravel, a man working on the roller, a man on the flattener machine, a man on a shoveler machine, and three men doing the other various tasks. The workers were very diverse, and there were three whites and three blacks (the man in the truck was not visible). Most of the workers were wearing traffic vests, but few chose to remain shirtless (it was burning outside). The workers were talking in loud voices and they started to work on our driveway.
First, the truck driver gave the flattener machine some gravel, and the truck driver went aside. The flattener machine went to the top of our driveway, and flattened out the gravel. Next, the flattener machine put some more gravel to the end of our driveway, and a roller machine came in, The roller machine flattened out the gravel, and a shoveler machine came in and moved the excess gravel. Next, a man wearing flattening shoes and another man was using a plunk to further refine the gravel. The two men flattened out the gravel till it was near perfection. The same was done on the other side by two other men therefore adding up to seven men who worked on the driveway. After the finishing touches, the workers moved onto the Wong's driveway.
It took the workers less than half an hour to complete our driveway, and they worked in a consistent and fast manner. The experience was cool to watch, and very interesting!
