Due to differences between the behavior of various animals, misunderstandings between different species can occur, often with detrimental consequences to both. Each species has disparate defining characteristics, some of which human beings do not recognize or understand. When different animals act upon human beings in a fashion typical of normal patterns within their species, they may inadvertently cause damage resulting from physiological distinctions that they obviously do not recognize.
Most frequently, unexpected behaviors in trained animals occur in the presence of unusual situations, which may consist of as little as an unwitting gesture or expression. It is not possible to fully tame any wild animal, and therefore wild behaviors manifest themselves in inconvenient circumstances. These behaviors are very difficult to predict or control, and have caused many accidental deaths. For example, tigers are accustomed to transporting young of their own species by biting the scruff of the neck, which is not possible with human beings; thus, a well-meaning tiger intending to defend a person may actually injure him. This occurred during the Siegfried and Roy incident, where a white tiger was put into a situation that was confusing to it and reacted based on its instincts. Since the tiger was reared from a cub by Roy, it may have felt protective of him.
The behavior of marine animals is arguably significantly less understood than the traits of terrestrial mammals, as the former is even less similar to human beings than the latter. Generally, animals with a history of aggression are more likely to attack a person indiscriminately than usually peaceful animals. The killer whale that killed a trainer at SeaWorld recently had such a bad history, so it was not especially surprising that it reacted extremely badly when the trainer fell into the water.
