I know a similar story.
I knew a guy who used to be a mechanic in a language lab of a university. He listened to VOA /BBC everyday 24/7 and did lots of homework of course. His hearing and listening comprehension became awesome later on. He got several books published about VOA and BBC news listening. It was said that he could even pick the errors even you fast forward English news. That is just a joke you can tell.
