APAD: The earth laughs in flowers

"The earth laughs in flowers" is a famous quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem Hamatreya (1847),  symbolizing nature's joy, beauty, and resilience. It suggests that flowers are the earth's way of expressing happiness and mocking humanity's vain attempts to own the land, as nature outlasts humans.

Context in the Poem:
    Where are these men? Asleep beneath their grounds:
    And strangers, fond as they, their furrows plough.
    Earth laughs in flowers, to see her boastful boys  
    Earth-proud, proud of the earth which is not theirs;

The phrase is often interpreted as a celebration of spring, the breathtaking beauty of nature. It serves as a reminder to slow down, appreciate nature and recognize that humanity is not truly in control of the earth, which thrives long after we are gone.

It was warm and beautiful yesterday, a perfect day to immerse in Mother Nature.  So we went for a 2.5 hour hike in Mt. Douglas park nearby, met happy people and their happy dogs along the route, as well as some happy native spring wildflowers.

Let's laugh together with the earth in flowers, and welcome the coming Earth Day on April 22nd.
