這個idiom的起源可以追溯到古羅馬時期，據說與古羅馬作家普林尼（Pliny the Elder）在其《自然史》（Naturalis Historia，公元77-79年）中的一段記載有關。 普林尼提到，龐培（Pompey）的敵人米特裏達梯六世（Mithridates VI）為了怕被下毒暗殺，曾試圖通過每天服用少量毒藥來增加自己對毒的抗性。
但那些毒藥很難吃，於是宮廷術士就建議國王配一點鹽巴（cum grano salis）， 這樣比較好下嚥。 於是後來這句習語逐漸被用於描述對一些不靠譜的，值得懷疑的東西，得“和著鹽”才能勉強接受。
