"Heart of gold" is an expression alluding to gold in the sense of “something valued for its goodness.”
This idiom means that someone has intentions that are pure, and that the person is kind and caring to others. They are good, sweet, without malice.

Canada is 158 today!!!
I still remember July 1st 1995, my first Canada day as a Canadian citizen in Ottawa. I brought my father, who was visiting then, to Rideau Hall, the official residence and workplace of the Governor General of Canada.
It was a beautiful sunny day like today. There was a big party with live music and abundant food/treats in the garden. Roméo LeBlanc, the governor general of Canada then, stood on the garden ground and shook hands with visitors. When it was my Dad's turn, I told the governor that my Dad was visiting from Beijing, he smiled and said to my Dad: "Welcome to Canada".
I took a picture of them at that moment.
Canada, you took me in with open arms when I felt like an orphan. You have a heart of gold!

ps. "Heart of Gold" by Neil Young is a very popular and iconic Canadian song. It's widely recognized as one of the most important and beloved Canadian songs of all time. The YouTube video below was recorded in Bergen Norway, 4 days after we left that beautiful city. Young, wearing a Canada t-shirt, is 79 yrs old, not as old as Canada ;-)
