We have discussed some similar idioms before in APAD, eg. "Birds of a feather flock together", "Show me who your friends are, and.." (and that's why 7G didn't want to keep dogs 
), but each has a slightly different meaning, I think.
I feel today's phrase is more focused on the individual side. Human beings are composites and we are social animals. While there are things one can't avoid (eg. I hate being the first bitten by mosquitoes in a crowd but I can't change my blood); one can certainly be careful with own behaviour to avoid attracting people one doesn't like, and to avoid things with hurtful consequences. It's really self choices, no right and no wrong, just consequences.
Oh, that might apply to fruits too, I think. I'm always attracted to peaches/nectarines when they are in season. But we don't have much this year in BC (Canada) due to the weather. So I feel so lucky visiting CA at the end of the season that I have been having at least two each and every day. So much so that peaches might think I'm one of them and be sorry when I'm gone 
.
Everything has an end, but sweet peach season will be back year after year. Long live the peaches!
