To properly experience the mood and atmosphere of the lunar new year, a traditional wet market is the place to be. It is crowded, vibrant, and noisy, but in a pleasant and down-to-earth way. Amid the organized chaos of street vendors and crammed shops is a dizzying array of seafood, meats, traditional new year treats and fresh produce. The air reeks of a raw and pungent scent, a mixture composed of catches of the sea and harvests of the land. The ground is always slippery and wet, and your shoes and pants will bear witness to the mess you've walked through. In the din of merchants shouting out their offerings and shoppers bargaining for better deals, one senses that this is the essence of our cultural identity and daily existence. The urge to buy and sample everything is almost irresistible, so don't hold back, give in to your impulses, have fun, and enjoy the show.
Happy New Year!
