It could be argued the 2-penny story was about faith,

rather than generosity or kindness.

The way I see it, kindness is not fundamental, but derived. To start with, one needs to have a clear mind about what is right or wrong before being kind. Otherwise, he risks abusing his kindness. Kindness is also different from tolerance. It is a state of heart rather than a set of rules/teaching.
