APAD: Man does not live by bread alone

Meaning: People have spiritual needs as well as physical needs.

 

Jesus answered: "It is written: Man does not live on bread alone, but on every

word that comes from the mouth of God." - Matthew 4:4, New International Bible.

David Crystal's book "Beget" listed three places where this phrase is found in

the Bible: Deuteronomy, Matthew, and Luke, and told some interesting modern

usages, mainly exploitations by the food industry.

 

The diary farmers, e.g., would argue in their ads: "Men does not live by bread

alone, but should also have plenty of cheese."
