I'd add "don't hurry, either." Just enjoy each step.
The proverb is often understood figuratively. After all, how many would travel a
thousand miles by foot? But it is literally true, too, as modern ultra-
marathoners know all too well.
I used to jog up and down Mission Peak, a local hill of 2200 ft above sea-level.
I never fretted about the goal, the summit, as the trail would sure lead me to
it. I simply put one foot in front of the other on the dirt and gravel path. As
the climb grew steep, I'd shorten the steps. When the course leveled off, I'd
lengthen my strides. All the time, I focused on breathing, relaxing the limbs,
and keeping the rhythm. Jogging therefore soon turned into a meditation. In less
than an hour, I would reach the top, still feeling fresh. It was beautiful.
