How many people did Mao kill and how many lives did he save?

The population of China had been stagnated from 1840 to 1949. For the hundred years of humiliation, the population of China virtually did not grow; however, the population doubled under Mao in just a quarter of a century. That's a big save of lives.

The life expectancy of the Chinese in China increased huge and fast during the Mao era.
