1. to bail
To stop doing something or leave a place before something is finished.
在某事還未結束之前停止或者離開。口語裏麵也用於“(等到最後一刻才)取消某個約會”,無法赴約,或者提前離開。注意在用於“放…鴿子”的時候需要加上一個介詞“on”,詳見第一個例句的運用。
Scarlett bailed on us, she said she had to take care of her sick kitty.
斯嘉麗放我們鴿子了,她說她要照顧她生病的貓。
Sorry, man, I've gotta bail. something came up.
抱歉兄弟,我得先走了,出了點事。
I've gotta bail, man, my friend is waiting for me at subway station.

2. to stand someone up
To fail to meet someone you had arranged to see/ to break a date by not showing up.
無法赴約某人, 或者不出現直接爽約,也是“放鴿子”的意思。
He was supposed to be here at seven, so by seven thirty I began to think that he stood me up.
他應該7點就應該在這裏的,所以到了七點半我就開始他應該是放我鴿子了。
He stood up his date to play basketball with the guys.
他為了跟其他男生打籃球而爽了約。
I'm sorry I stood you up, but I had a family emergency last night.
真對不起我放了你鴿子,當昨晚我家裏確實出了點急事
