Color Field 類的作品大家一定不陌生。Color Field 始於1940s in New York, 屬於現代抽象主義和表現主義運動的一部分。但是”Color Field“本身沒有特別含意。正如畫家Jules Olitski所說:
“I don't know what Color Field painting means. I think it was probably invented by some critic, which is okay, but I don't think the phrase means anything. Color Field painting? I mean, what is color? Painting has to do with a lot of things. Color is among the things it has to do with. It has to do with surface. It has to do with shape, It has to do with feelings which are more difficult to get at.”
以這幅馬克·羅斯科的畫為例,這類作品注重精神內涵的表達。他力圖通過有限的色彩和極少的形狀來反映深刻的象征意義。馬克·羅斯科認為,現今西方文明根植於西方的傳統文化,尤其是希臘文化。希臘悲劇精神中人與自然、個體與群體之間的衝突,正是人的基本生存狀態的寫照。他說,“我對色彩與形式的關係以及其他的關係並沒有興趣……我感興趣的隻是表達人的基本情緒,悲劇的,狂喜的,毀滅的等等,許多人能在我的畫前悲極而泣的事實表明,我的確傳達出了人類的基本感情,能在我的畫前落淚的人就會有和我在作畫時所具有的同樣的宗教體驗。”
我個人認為,欣賞藝術不是單純的去聽或看。關鍵是keep an open mind, 隻有這樣藝術作品才有可能與你溝通和影響你的心靈。有時一件作品不能引起你的共鳴,但不會永遠是這樣。就象年輕時不大會能領會到古典著作的深層含意,而日後再讀則豁然開朗。
