The Festive Overture was premiered in 1954 at a concert held at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution. Its composer Dmitri Shostakovich took only 3 days to write it. It was immediately recognized as a great piece of music and has been performed all over the world in celebrations of all kinds. I have heard this piece quite a few times, the most impressive of which being the one at a concert celebrating the victory of the Chinese people in our war against the Japanese aggression. I think it is a fit piece for our Chinese New Year's celebration too.
