試譯莎士比亞十四行詩作品第20號

哲學思辨太費神，來個輕鬆的：

Sonnet 20

 

1  A woman's face with nature's own hand painted,
2. Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion;
3. A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted
4. With shifting change, as is false women's fashion:
5. An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
6. Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
7. A man in hue all hues in his controlling,
8. Which steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth.
9. And for a woman wert thou first created;
10. Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
11. And by addition me of thee defeated,
12. By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
13. But since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure,
14. Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure.

自然親手把你做成女人相貌，

你就是主宰我的激情的情婦；

你的心如女人溫柔，壞女人

愛變心的風氣，你可是生疏；

 

你眼睛更亮，但不偽媚亂送，

你顧盼到哪裏哪裏金光散布；

男人本色男性氣質掌控在手，

足以讓男人目呆女人魂魄丟；

 

大自然先為你把女兒身做就，

做你、寵愛你時她犯了糊塗，

為搶走你她用加法將我打敗，

加一物對我的目的等於無物：

 

她加那棒是為女人樂，讓愛

歸我，你做愛是她們的眷顧。

 

注：

1.      這首詩所包含的隱喻來自希臘神話中的Pygmalion的故事。根據奧維德的《變形記》：Pygmalion是古希臘傑出的雕塑家，他愛上了自己雕塑出來的一個美女。莎士比亞在這裏把大自然比作一位雕塑家。她先給這位男士做成一個女兒身，在做的過程中喜歡上了自己的作品，於是給她加上一個男性的器官，好讓自己和其他女性享用。但是這個東西對作者是毫無用途的。這是一個貫穿全詩的暗喻，構思奇妙。

2.      判斷到底莎士比亞是不是同性戀，有人認為這是一首重要的詩歌。在這首詩裏，作者愛的是一位上流社會的男士，他具有女人的相貌，女人溫柔的心。可以看出，作者對同性戀的行為沒興趣。

3.      第十三行“since she prick'd thee out for women's pleasure，”有人注釋為“ Falstaff selects his military recruits by ‘pricking’ their names on a list, and ‘she equipped you with a prick (pennis).’（Duncan-Jones, p.20）
