I just finished Chapter 2. I like Nick too, especially I was very impressed by the way he handled Gat*****y’s funeral and the way he treated Gat*****y’s father in the later chapters of the book.
Agree with you that the author should just tell the story and leave the judgment to the readers. Everyone has/his own Hamlet; for the same reason, everyone has his/own Gat*****y or Ethan Frome. Lu Xun (魯迅)wrote great essays, but he is not a good novelist, because he could not help judging and criticizing the characters in his novels (like 阿Q正傳,孔已己 et al.)
