簫華，我的一個朋友剛才打電話來說她心情不好。她怎麽了？是憂鬱症嗎？不是，她開的咖啡店生意慘淡，三個星期來一直賠錢，這樣下去，她的生意很危險，弄不好就要關門了。 噢，用一個美國習慣用語來說就是，her business is on the line。 To be on the line這個習慣用語的意思是處於危險狀態，通常是指生意或婚姻、 或者指一個人的名譽有被損壞的風險，甚至生命有危險。

下麵我們來聽一個例句，這是一位政界人士被控受賄，前景可危。

例句-1：We should hear more evidence over the next few days. Meanwhile, Mr. Wilson has to be very nervous. His reputation and indeed his position are on the line. Unless Mr. Wilson is completely cleared of the accusation, he is sure to lose the election.

這段話說：今後幾天裏我們會聽到更多的證據。 Wilson先生現在一定非常緊張。他的名譽和地位都有危險。 除非能證明對他的指控都是不實之詞，否則他肯定會落選。

To be on the line這個習慣用語是19世紀開始流行的，最初是指戰爭的前線，那裏有遭到炮火襲擊的危險。後來，on the line的意思有所擴大，可以指其他的危險或風險。

對了，蘇明，昨天晚上我看了一個電視連續劇，其中就用了on the line這個習慣用語。 是哪個電視連續劇呀？

連續劇裏的男主人公名字叫Frasier。他的弟弟雖然已經結婚成家，卻愛上了一個有夫之婦。但是他不知道對方是否也鍾情於他。

噢，我知道這個電視劇。Frasier看到弟弟的情況，很想替他們倆人傳情，可是又怕破壞雙方的家庭。對，我們來聽聽他爸爸是怎麽看的：

例句-2：Listen Frasier, you'd better not get involved unless you are absolutely sure that they'll be happier this way. Don't forget there are two marriages on the line here, and you could ruin them both.

這段話說：聽著，Frasier,你最好不要參與這件事，除非你十分肯定他們相愛會使他們更幸福。 別忘了有兩對夫婦的婚姻都處於危險的境地。你有可能把它們都毀了啊。

蕭華，現在的孩子們看電視看得太多，影響他們念書和參加體育運動。是啊，這是目前青少年教育的一個大問題。 所以有不少美國家長都給孩子定下規矩，例如，每天隻允許看一個節目，還有的規定隻有在周末才能看電視。

孩子們都得遵守這些規矩，用一個美國習慣用語來說就是：they have to toe the line。Toe是腳趾，line是線，toe the line的意思是遵守規則，服從要求。 在下麵的例句裏，一個推銷員說，他們的老板新官上任三把火，雇員們都很緊張。

例句-3：I think they fired the other guy because he wasn't strict enough. The new guy will make us toe the line. I think we're going to have to follow every sales lead now, and I've heard he's going to enforce the dress code.

這段話的意思是：我認為他們解雇那家夥是因為他不夠嚴格。 新來的這個人一定會要我們嚴格遵守規定。 我想以後任何一個銷售線索我們都不能漏掉，聽說他還要大家遵守服裝方麵的規定。

蘇明，你知道toe the line這個習慣用語是怎麽來的嗎？這個習慣用語是在19世紀開始出現的。 當時還有其他一些意思相同的習慣用語，比如，"toe the mark", "toe the scratch" and "toe the crack" 。但是現在用的最多的是toe the line，其他的就很少用了。 我還不太清楚，toe the line裏的line指的是什麽線啊？那是指起跑線或是軍事檢閱時候地上畫的線。我們再來聽一個toe the line的例句。 這是一個強大國家的政界人士在對別的國家的批評作出反映。他說：
