The earthquake not only damaged the middle center area of L’Aquila into a broken piece, but also wiped out the surrounding neighbourhood. It made the L’Aquila area that located in the north east of Rome just looked like a war zone.

shattered...into broken pieces.

Need to be one sentence; maybe use "making the L'Aquila area... "
