Yes, you are right about the origin of the American Dream. Long time ago, I wrote my BA thesis on the Great Gat*****y and talked about the shattered American Dream of Gat*****y's in that novel. So this concept is dear and close to my heart.
Now, more than 15 years later, I look back and I think it is now very different from what I understood before. The concept is evolving by itself. And for different groups of people, the understanding is varied too. It is very interesting.
