the habbit being able to --> the habit of being able to

 If I would have had this habbit when I was young, I would avoid wasting time significantly. -->

與過去事實相反的虛擬：

If had done ..., ... would (might) have done ...

原文：

It would have saved me a frightful waste of time if I had ever had it drilled into me in youth.

posses --> possess
