用英語寫散文跟寫詩歌不一樣，在散文裏，要避免用韻。史蒂文曾經說過:“散文必須要有節奏…，但不能對稱…不能成為韻文。”
英語散文寫作裏，應該避免出現下麵這類句子。
(1) I read in his eye that it was a lie. (“eye”and“lie”)
(2) I fully intend to go on to the end. (“intend”and“end”)
(3) She would fain have forgotten these frivolous fancies, but they regularly returned. (“fain,” “forgotten,” “frivolous,” and“fancies”)
