One thing I know from having lived in HK for many years in the 80s' is that there has been this negative mindset toward Mainland Chinese regardless who you are, unfortunely this mindset has not gone away with time. Here is my sitcom:
I stood in line of the Immigration Service to get my "green card" renewed, one morning in late 80s. This usually took at least half of a day so I brought my Chemistry textbook from my evening F7 class just so that I got myself occupied. All of sudden an officer of the department came over, grabbed the textbook from my hands and flipped back and forth. "How can you understand this?" He was surprised I was reading a book in English, and obviously this was a grade level higher than all of his education combined, "How can you Mainlander read in English?! Do you understand?"
Read at your own risk and don't blame me for changing your point of view.
