Don't sign the release until you are paid. Once you sign the release, you cannot pursue them anymore.

Remember any repair on the car body is expensive, $50 is not likely to cover it. Unless your car is a, say rusty '85 car worth only $500, then asking $1000 to repair a dent makes you look like blackmailing them.
