我該賠 這筆錢 嗎?

我8月底來美國加州短期學習。最初住在房東家，一周後，她因更換地毯，把我送到她男朋友家暫住。暫住期間，我請朋友來聚會（事前沒有征得主人同意），朋友接手機時無意中走進男主人的臥室，並順手把邊上的衣櫥門給關了一下。結果，男主人就說地板被劃了，並要求我賠償他400美元，否則他將把我和我在北京的單位告上法庭。事實上，那個門早就擦地了。迄今，對方並沒有出示能證明是新劃痕的證據，而且拒絕調解，或采取便宜的辦法處理劃痕。
我認為自己沒有先行賠付的責任，而且這事和我的單位沒有任何關係。
我已經把那個朋友（他是美國長大的華人，現住加州另一城市）的住址電話等信息告訴了男主人，因為我認為應該他們之間進行交涉。但由於那個朋友不住本地，男主人覺得找我要錢最直接。所以，不肯放過我。
糟糕的是我的那個朋友由於種種原因，想逃避責任，不接也不回複我的電話。
請教各位，我是過錯方嗎？我是應該支付那400美元，以息事寧人，免於被起訴？還是不予理睬，由他告去，因為他告錯了人，最終敗訴的將會是他？我會勝訴嗎？我12月中將回國，回去後還會有麻煩嗎？在美國被起訴會影響到我將來再來美國嗎？
