Blood Glucose Meter

I just bought a Bayer Contour Next EZ Glucose Meter Kit for my parents. Since it is my first time buying blood glucose meter, I have some questions.  How to know it is accurate? Do I need to calibrate it before using it? If so, where can I get it calibrated?  Which brand is the best one? Thanks in advance!
