MD Anderson 甲狀腺癌專家的孩子從來不照dental X-ray!

幾周前， 醫院大查房 （ground round）請的speaker是MD Anderson 的甲狀腺癌專家。 talk 完了。本院一位資深醫師提問要求speaker解釋一下dental Xray和甲狀腺癌的關係。 speaker脫口而出： “我自己的孩子還從來沒有照過dental x ray” 呢。頓時，全場一片寂靜。。。事後，同事們說，他們記住的就是這一句話。。。Talk的其他detail都不記得了。

長聽人說，dental Xray 的輻射劑量很小， 隻相當於從東海岸到西海岸一次飛行的背景輻射劑量。 問題是牙科檢查的x光射線是集中照射的，而background 背景輻射是散布在全身的。Critical organ 受到的輻射很小。即便如此，空姐們的 breast cancer和skin cancer 還是比一般人高的。文獻如下：

關鍵是正如American Cancer Society 說的，radiation沒有safe dose。所以光照得少一點，防護得好一點，總是有幫助的。這就是所謂的ALARA。

。。。there is no threshold below which this kind of radiation is thought to be totally safe.

ALARA

As defined in Title 10, Section 20.1003, of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR 20.1003), ALARA is an acronym for "as low as (is) reasonably achievable," which means making every reasonable effort to maintain exposures to ionizing radiation as far below the dose limits as practical。。。
