When I can find it, I tend to listen

to my inner voice, or my intuition, because it comes from my authentic self.

About our guilty conscience, sometimes it's self-imposed (e.g., I should do everything my parents ask of me). Of course, there are aspects of a guilty conscience that are there to regulate ourselves (not to commit a crime, for example).
