大麻首先在英文中有很多名字和外號，包括Cannabis，Hemp，Pot， Weed，Marijuana等等。就這些名字是否意味著不同的含義或大麻種類，對此不僅有不同說法，混淆起來可能讓人對大麻的概念和作用也會產生不同理解。
加拿大參院批準的休閑性大麻合法化的大麻英文名是Cannabis。這是官方選擇的詞匯，也是大麻家族來自拉丁文的學名統稱，包括植物學上的三大類大麻。
從用途上分，可分為工業大麻、醫用大麻和休閑性大麻（毒品），其中有些種類是多用途的。

是否是毒品大麻，關鍵在於這種大麻中所含的毒品成份四氫大麻酚（簡稱THC）的含量有多少。中國漢麻中THC的含量低於0.3%。
