幾年前碰到一件印象很深的小事。 上班的一個項目在開始階段要表達一個1:n的關係, 然後n的那頭如果有一方接受了“1”那頭的請求,就變成了1:1. 同事發給analysts的電郵解釋說, 這就是1個男人同時向幾個女人求婚,以第1個接受求婚的女人為準,其他求婚就作廢。
同事的這個解釋對不懂數學的那些analysts非常有幫助,讓她們一下子就明白了怎麽回事。 更給我一個Aha moment. 原來Metaphor可以這樣的簡潔準確, 而且很容易讓外行明白你的意思!
這幾天在讀一本“Metaphors be with you", by Dr. Mardy Grothe. 裏麵有幾點很有道理:
1. Metaphor 表達是"A is B"
語言學上有個表親,名字叫simile, 表達是"A is like B"
另一個表親,名字叫Analogy, 表達是"A is to B as C is to D"
2. Metaphor is not just the marriage ceremony linking the 2 things; It is the child born from the union
這句我一聽就明白了作者的意思。 我覺得作者表達了好幾層意思, 既有表達一方要有洞察力找到二者相似之處的一層意思, 也有聽眾要用reasoning power to deduce的一層意思。 說到底,就是用B來體驗A出來的結果。
3. Metaphor可以讓聽眾從cognitive understanding跳躍到intutive mind
比如書裏有個例子,有句諺語: Man is but a bubble
你也可以這麽說: Fleeting and brief is the life of man.
用來Metaphor的前者要遠遠更有感染力, 原因是"bubble"讓聽眾看見,而且感染聽眾的情緒。
上周開始產品在顧客那裏有點問題。 顧客就是飯碗,本來早就可以休假的我一直忙到昨天才改好。 我給我們頭解釋我是怎樣改好的:
A better analogy might be that I just did a Kidney transplant operation. The Kidney is not grown from stem cell, rather it is from another healthy body. So hopefully the risk is lower.
原來不知不覺之間我也學著用Metaphor來解釋事情了。
