Automatic shut down usually is because CPU over heating, faulty memory, types hardware problems. Probably not something your friend installed.
To get the files out there, try that oldman8 suggested. An easy way is to get a "hard drive enclosure" (sold in places like fry's for ~$10), which converts a hard drive as a external u***** drive, you can plug in any working computer, and access the files on the drive.
