I like smaller distros too. PCLinuxOS was my favorite at the very beginning(and, you are right, it is an appropriate distro for biginners). I also tried Zenwalk and Vector in my early days and liked both of them because they are slim and super-fast. I like Xfce environment better than gnome or KDE.
