how to setup the network?

I came to London last month. But up to now I still can not use internet because before I can use internet I had to get the user name and pin number from the adiminstrator of my university. Because it is christmas time, I still did not get these information. Sometime I use a guy's name to use internet (the guy quited and he told me his user name and pin number). I have my own computer. I want to use my computer (Win XP). Who can tell me how to setup the network?
