The reason he complained to you about his ex-wife, his girl-friend, his pay, etc. is that he wants YOU to treat him at the "personal" level. He questions you and asks you to change your code is HIM treating you at the "business" level. Such arrangement ensures his dominant position.
Your boss may have hired you as a foil, partly, to distract your co-worker and to dilute his bad effect.
